Eyelids

Asian eyelid surgery is one of the most well known surgeries for people who are looking to improve their appearance and overall facial appeal. The purpose of this procedure is to enhance the shape and features of your eyes. Asian mono-eyelids, or Asian eyelids, have a certain appearance that lacks a prominent or noticeable upper eyelid. This is due to lack of connection from the skin to the underlying eye-elevating muscle.

This connection is what creates a supratarsal fold or double eyelid crease. Asian eyelids also have the tendency to be thicker due to an increased amount of skin, superficial muscle or orbicularis muscle, and fat deposition. This causes the eye-elevating muscle, or the levator, to appear smaller in size. Since the levator is smaller, it decreases the amount of eyelid elevation, which causes Asian eyelids to have ptosis. Ptosis is also known as drooping or falling of the upper eyelid. Most people with larger eyes have a stronger eye-elevating muscle, or levator, which decreases the amount of ptosis.

For people of Asian decent who have existing natural folds, the connection is a singular layer rather than a multi-layer as seen in most non-Asian eyes. The singular layer connection occurs at the site of the crease, whereas for non-Asians it extends from the visible crease all the way down to the upper lash line. This multilayer of connections in non-Asian eyes is what provides a stronger and more distributed force throughout the eyelid. Due to this singular connection, even natural Asian eyelid folds tend to be weaker and more prone to loosening and drooping with age.

Eyelid Lift

The eyes are often the first feature that others notice on a person. Unfortunately, over time people can develop an angry or tired look because of weakened facial muscles and drooping eyelid skin. At Highly Artistic Surgery, Dr. Ha regularly performs eyelid lift surgery (blepharoplasty) to give individuals a youthful and refreshed facial appearance.

Ideal candidates for an eyelid lift procedure are in good overall health with realistic expectations and some or all of the following conditions:

  • Sagging skin around the eyes
  • Puffiness or bags under the eyes
  • Sagging upper eyelids that impair vision
  • No serious eye conditions

Procedure

Eyelid lift surgery is performed under sedation anesthesia. Depending on the patient’s needs, Dr. Ha can perform surgery on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

  • Upper Eyelid Lift – To remove excess skin and puffiness from the upper region of the eye, Dr. Ha will make an incision along the crease of the upper eyelid fold to remove fat deposits and excess skin.
  • Lower Eyelid Lift – An incision is made just beneath the lower lash line to remove excess skin and fat. If puffiness is extremely apparent, an incision may be made inside the lower eyelid to correct it, and laser resurfacing can be used to tighten and smooth the periorbital skin.

Oftentimes, patients combine an eyelid lift with a browlift or facelift to achieve complete facial rejuvenation.

The improvements from eyelid lift surgery are immediately noticeable after the procedure is complete. Patients do not have to worry about apparent scarring because the incisions will be concealed within the natural creases of the eyelids.
